After loading another truckload of firewood into his spatial storage, Su Jiao drove back toward the city.
On a quiet stretch of road without surveillance cameras, he checked that there were no other vehicles nearby before transferring all the canned goods into his space.
A considerable amount of supplies had accumulated over the past two days. Everything inside the space was piled up in a disorderly mess, with some items even scattered across the farmland on the second floor.
Su Jiao wanted to organize everything properly. It would make room for more supplies and save him the trouble of searching for things later.
Unfortunately, his current abilities weren't up to the task.
As he continued driving, he passed a fairly large village. He slowed down and eventually stopped in front of a house near the roadside.
An elderly woman was sitting in the courtyard, enjoying the sunshine.
Su Jiao rolled down the window and called out.
"Grandma, do you have any chickens, ducks, cows, or sheep for sale? Or do you know anyone nearby who might be selling them?"
The elderly woman appeared to be in good health. Her eyes frequently wandered toward Su Jiao's striking golden hair, but there was nothing particularly unusual about her expression.
"We do have some, although not many. Are you interested?"
She paused thoughtfully before continuing.
"There are also some piglets available. But they're all raised on commercial feed. They aren't very big yet, and the prices might be higher than you expect."
Even so, livestock raised on commercial feed was generally more expensive than animals raised traditionally in rural households.
Most villagers weren't particularly willing to sell their livestock, either. Fortunately, the elderly woman had a relative who was selling some animals because of financial difficulties.
They had already sold quite a few animals a few days earlier. If Su Jiao had arrived two days later, he might not have been able to buy anything at all.
Su Jiao thought for a moment.
"Could you help me get two breeding pairs of each? Do you have that many available?"
The elderly woman smiled.
"Young man, are you planning to raise them yourself at home?"
Su Jiao got out of the car and answered somewhat sheepishly.
"That's right. My family wants to become more self-sufficient."
"Well, it seems nobody at home has taught you much about raising livestock."
The elderly woman waved him over, motioning for him to come closer.
"Listen, you don't need a pair of every animal. One male and several females are enough, especially when it comes to pigs. You don't want too many males, or the meat won't taste as good."
Su Jiao blinked and crouched beside her.
"Then, Grandma, could you recommend how many I should get? I don't need too many. Just enough to provide food for the family throughout the year."
The elderly woman was delighted to see a young man willing to listen to her advice.
"Chickens and ducks are easy to raise. You can wait until the temperature reaches around ten degrees next year before letting the hens start brooding. They can hatch more than a dozen chicks in a year, so you don't need to buy many."
"As for pigs, cattle, and sheep, you'll need a few more. Is your land large?"
Su Jiao thought about the separate compartments he had planned for livestock in his spatial storage.
"Not particularly. There's a designated area for raising them, but I can't let them roam around freely."
The farmland on the second floor would provide enough room for them to move about, but he still needed to reserve most of it for growing vegetables.
"Oh, by the way, Grandma, do you know anyone who sells fruit trees? I'd be happy to pay you a little extra for helping me arrange it."
The elderly woman waved her hand.
"Now, now. There's no need to pay me any introduction fee. What kind of fruit trees are you looking for? I'll ask around."
"I'm not particular about the varieties. As long as they produce fruit, that's fine."
After the extreme cold arrived, having fresh fruit would become difficult. Even finding enough fruit to eat would be a luxury.
The elderly woman thought for a moment, then took out her phone to confirm the quantities of livestock and fruit trees she could arrange.
She showed the information to Su Jiao.
"Here, young man. Take a look. Would this many be enough?"
Su Jiao glanced over the figures and nodded.
The elderly woman sent a few messages. It wasn't long before someone arrived with the animals.
The chickens and ducks came in cages, while the piglets, calves, and lambs were brought separately.
As soon as the seller arrived, he greeted the elderly woman warmly.
"Uncle!"
The man seemed rather impatient. After exchanging a few words with her, he immediately started discussing payment.
Seeing how eager he was to complete the transaction, Su Jiao didn't waste time negotiating. He paid the man directly and asked him to help load the animals into the van.
Fortunately, all the animals were still young. Although the van wasn't particularly large, they didn't take up too much room.
While the livestock was being loaded, the fruit tree seller arrived as well.
"These are all young saplings. They haven't fully matured yet, but they'll start bearing fruit next year. My trees are well known around here. As long as the weather holds up, you can always come back to me."
The man spoke with great confidence.
Su Jiao listened and felt rather uneasy.
Weather holds up?
There wouldn't even be two days left before the disaster began, let alone enough time to wait for the Spring Festival.
After everything had been loaded, Su Jiao thanked the elderly woman and took out several hundred-yuan banknotes to give her as a token of appreciation.
She initially tried to refuse, but he insisted.
On the way back, Su Jiao transferred everything in the cargo compartment into his spatial storage.
This time, he deliberately placed the livestock on the farmland on the second floor. That way, they wouldn't accidentally bite or damage the supplies stored on the first floor if they became hungry.
Even temporarily arranging the animals inside the space consumed a considerable amount of mental energy.
Su Jiao rested in the car for a while before continuing toward the timber factory.
Another load of scrap timber was waiting for him there.
After purchasing and transferring the wood, Su Jiao calculated how much money he had left.
He decided it was time to buy some coal as well.
Burning coal was dangerous, but relying entirely on firewood would consume too much. Once the temperature dropped further, the daily demand for heating would become enormous.
Fortunately, coal was still relatively inexpensive. Since it was summer, a large sack cost only around two hundred yuan.
Su Jiao purchased 30,000 yuan worth of coal and transferred everything into his spatial storage.
At this point, his available funds were almost exhausted.
Leaning back in the driver's seat, Su Jiao took several deep breaths.
He opened the various apps on his phone and began checking whether there was anything else he needed to purchase.
There were so many products available online. After living through the Age of Extreme Cold for so many years, he had forgotten the existence of many ordinary household items.
Over the past few days, he had simply bought whatever caught his attention. Sometimes, he wasn't even sure whether he would actually need the things he ordered.
Still, he had gradually become more familiar with the process, and there weren't many things left to purchase.
It was almost one in the afternoon.
Su Jiao quickly drove toward the warehouse.
Same-city deliveries usually arrived earlier than other shipments. It would be better to get there ahead of time and wait.
As soon as he pulled up in front of the warehouse, he spotted a courier unloading packages from his vehicle.
Su Jiao parked and walked over.
"Hello. Are these all deliveries for Mr. Su?"
The courier looked up, momentarily confused.
"Ah, yes. Are you Mr. Su?"
Su Jiao glanced at the packages in his hands. There was also a considerable pile scattered across the ground.
"Are all of these mine?"
Seeing his confusion, the courier became equally puzzled. He took out his phone and carefully checked the delivery list before nodding.
"Yes. Everything in this vehicle is yours. There are also some packages scheduled to arrive around three o'clock. Is that a problem?"
"Oh, no. No problem at all."
Su Jiao scratched his head, quickly unlocked the warehouse, and began moving the packages inside.
There were so many deliveries that by the time he had finished unloading everything, sweat was already running down his back.
He casually switched on the air conditioner, ordered some lunch through his phone, and began opening the packages.
He started with several of the larger boxes, setting aside two empty cartons before moving on to the smaller parcels.
The grain and seed deliveries weren't particularly large, so he placed them all in one big box. The household necessities went into another.
Unpacking packages was surprisingly satisfying, even after all these years.
Su Jiao was still busy opening his deliveries when the courier interrupted him again.
Today's lunch was pork trotter rice.
He treated himself to a hearty meal, then returned to sorting through the packages without wasting any time.
After three o'clock, the courier's second vehicle arrived.
Su Jiao continued unpacking and even had dinner in the warehouse.
He remained busy until five, almost six in the evening.
When he finally checked his phone, he discovered that another batch of packages was scheduled to arrive at seven.
He wasn't in a hurry to go home.
First, he returned the rental van and drove his own car back to the warehouse.
He burned the shipping labels and other documents containing his personal information. Then he flattened the empty cardboard boxes and transferred them into his spatial storage.
He also gathered all the rubbish from the plastic packaging and discarded it properly.
The final batch of deliveries arriving at seven wasn't particularly large in number, but the packages themselves were quite bulky.
Su Jiao checked their contents one by one before transferring everything into his space.
Only then did he finally drive home.
It was already quite late when he arrived.
After taking a shower, Su Jiao collapsed into bed and fell asleep almost immediately.
The following morning, Su Jiao woke up without any clear idea of what he had been dreaming about.
He spent the morning making two trips to the timber factory. He also stopped by the grain market and purchased additional rice, flour, grains, and cooking oil from another shop.
Once his remaining funds had fallen to around 100,000 yuan, he added a few more same-city products to his shopping cart, placed the orders, and returned to the warehouse to wait for the deliveries.
With so little money left, Su Jiao spent a long time collecting the remaining packages.
By the time September 19 arrived, he reviewed his plans and realized that there wasn't much left to do.
The only thing remaining was to wait for the final batch of large deliveries at the warehouse.
For once, he decided not to rush out of bed.
He stayed beneath the covers for quite a while, lazily watching a few videos on his phone before finally getting up to prepare himself a hearty breakfast.
Only after eating did he slowly head out.
Today was the main delivery day.
Beginning at ten in the morning, Su Jiao spent the entire day collecting packages.
He didn't finish until seven or eight in the evening.
After confirming online that the final shipment had arrived, he stretched his arms high above his head.
A series of cracking sounds came from his joints as he moved.
He yawned and stopped by a barbecue shop on his way home. He bought more than three hundred yuan worth of barbecue and two bottles of beer.
Today was the last day of peace.
Su Jiao wanted to enjoy one proper meal before everything changed.
Tomorrow, at three in the afternoon, ordinary life would come to an end.
As he closed the courtyard gate behind him, an unexpected feeling of melancholy settled over his heart.
He had only been back for a few days. He had spent almost every waking moment rushing around, with hardly any time to rest.
Yet somehow, he had already grown reluctant to leave this peaceful world behind.
If only the extreme cold never came.
Even if he couldn't use all the supplies he had painstakingly collected, he would still be perfectly content.
Su Jiao carried the barbecue into the living room and placed it on the table.
He switched on the television and randomly selected a program that didn't require a subscription.
Soon, he was completely absorbed in his food.
A mouthful of barbecue, followed by a sip of beer.
It was absolutely delicious!
There was quite a lot of food, but by the time Su Jiao finished eating, he still didn't feel full.
He ordered fried chicken and several other kinds of fried food online, thinking that even if he couldn't finish everything, he could simply store the leftovers in his space.
And then...
The food on the table disappeared once again.
Su Jiao looked at the pile of rubbish beside him and fell silent for two seconds.
Only then did he notice something strange.
He immediately checked his spatial storage.
Ever since his rebirth, there had always been a strong barrier separating him from the space. But now, a large amount of mixed energy was surging inside it.
The sluggishness that had previously prevented him from controlling the space precisely had disappeared completely.
With a single thought, Su Jiao moved a pile of firewood into the storage room he had designated earlier.
Even more astonishingly, the wood arranged itself neatly inside.
Su Jiao froze.
His mind was in complete disarray.
This was beyond anything he had been capable of in his previous life.
Even after spending so many years in the Age of Natural Disasters, he had only managed to establish an entrance to his spatial storage within a physical object.
As for controlling the contents from outside, he could only move and organize things slowly, one item at a time.
Although the process wasn't particularly exhausting, it had always been extremely inconvenient.
But now...
Su Jiao blinked, staring at his vague reflection on the television screen.
His eyes were filled with confusion.
He pinched his thigh.
The sharp pain immediately brought him back to his senses.
